Trenton Campaign The collection of artifacts belonging to the Swan Historical Foundation is on display at Washington Crossing State Park in New Jersey. The collection is in an area rich in the history of the American War of Independence. In late 1776 and early 1777, George Washington and his army undertook one of the greatest campaigns in American history. The patriots braved the ice-choked Delaware River to cross from Pennsylvania to New Jersey and strike the Hessian garrison at Trenton. This battle was soon followed by the Second Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Princeton. These battles together comprise the famous Trenton Campaign.
