FRENCH MODEL 1766 MUSKET

FRENCH MODEL 1766 MUSKET

French infantry muskets replaced the older British "Brown Bess" muskets in the American Army during and after the Summer of 1777. On January 30th, 1777, all arms belonging to the United States, not to individual states, units or private troops, were required to be surcharged: "United States." Note this stamping on the grip of the stock. This popular model was adopted as the official musket of the young United States in 1795, and ordered manufactured at the Springfield, Massachusetts Armory.
